I'm hosting monthly craft sessions at my apartment, starting this month with tassel earrings. It was amazing to me how many strings got tangled and tied into knots, but these ladies stuck it out and made some awesome earrings!
Here is how you can do it at home.
Supplies:
- 4 packs of embroidery thread from Michaels. I used satin for mine.
- Scizzors, sewing needle, index card
- Ear hooks. We used 14k gold plated from Rio Grande
First step is to make 8 total tassels, 4 for each earring. This is the hardest part, but there are lots of resources online on how to make tassels. My favorite is here:
We made a lot of earrings so we had much more thread than one pair would call for. Each pack of thread is approx $0.50 each.
Cut an index card 1.5" wide. Position a length of thread across the top of the card and wrap the thread 30x around it. Keep in mind that this will be your tassel length and width.
Once complete, tie your loose thread in a double knot at what will be the top of your tassel.
Slide the tied loop off of the index card.
Pinch the top of the tassel where your initial knot was tied and proceed to wrap the head of the tassel with a new piece of thread, as shown in the video link above. You can also simply tie and wrap, but this does not look as clean as the method shared above.
Once wrapped, slide your scizzors into the bottom of the loop, cut and trim the threads.
The tassel is now complete! Repeat 7 more times.
Almost finished..!
Last step - Stitch the ear hook to the top of each earring.
Here are the finished earrings we made using a variety of colors and thread materials.
